Inverigo

Green Land

is a municipality of about 9200 inhabitants in the Province of Como, in Lombardy.

Inverigo is a very ancient land: the proofs are the vicus romanorum, districts those today still maintain the names of Romanò and Villa Romanò. Its history and its development are strictly linked to the Crivellis, one of the most ancient families of the Milan nobility. The charming town is rich of important architectural monuments, as Villa Cagnola, also named as Rotonda, that is one of the wonders of Brianza. It is rounded by cypresses, the same those delineate the Boulevard of Cypresses, a unique pleasant walk for its mixture between art and landscape.
Although some interruptions, the path is linear and clear, pointed by lots of important architectural particularities. It is a suggestive walk that takes about an hour and a half and it reminds intensely to Tuscany landscape. At one of the ends of the Boulevard there is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Noce, essential part of the local tradition, but also a testimony of an high artistic value. Not less picturesque are the bucolic landscapes of Pomelasca property, immersed in open countryside. You need about twenty minutes of walk to reach the park of the noble villa and there you can visit of the green area in about an hour and a half.

BOULEVARD OF CYPRESSES

From Inverigo railway station get Via IV Novembre. Duration of the walk: about an hour.
BOULEVARD OF CYPRESSES
You feel like a king when, escorted by an army of perfectly aligned cypresses, you walk through the seventeenth-century tree-lined avenue. As loyal disciplined soldiers, with dark green arm ours featuring a slender yet imposing shape, they accompany the visitor along an almost 2 kilometre-long path, into a world touching different realities.
Commissioned by the marquis Gian Battista Crivelli, the first of the three part stakes visitors from the Crivelli castle, the sumptuous family residence, to the Santa Maria della Noce sanctuary. A walkable path created to enable people to reach the church easily. What is amazing is how this breath-taking path is perfectly integrated into the surrounding landscape.
From the very first steps, you feel like as if you are walking within a truly monumental building.
The classic statues alternate with cypresses and the view of this very long corridor with floral walls are strikingly beautiful and express the magnificence of the place. However, viewed from the outside, the tree-lined boulevard does not particularly stand out compared to the stunning surroundings. The open fields, the hills and the lawns look as if they have been specifically designed to include this pathway that winds up and downs accordingly. The second leg heads for the Navello church, a genuine treasure chest in the middle of the woods, adorned with frescoes of absolute beauty, which are now threatened by negligence and decay.
The last and most recent leg was realized in the eighteenth century and is not straight like the first two, but it is likewise remarkable due to the presence of “the giant”, a statue of Hercules that proudly dominates a stone staircase.
Walking along this narrow strip of land, so rich in history and art, makes you aware of how many beautiest here are to discover and preserve against time.

SANCTUARY S. MARIA DELLA NOCE

The Sanctuary is placed at the head of Boulevard of Cypresses. Duration of the visit: about 20 minutes.
SANCTUARY S. MARIA DELLA NOCE
A history of woods and miracles, silkworms and copper. Everything started in the early years of the sixteenth century, when two little boys got lost in the forest and were rescued by the Virgin Mary. The mother of Jesus appeared on a walnut tree and pulled them to safety on that freezing night. Two decades later a sanctuary was built and dedicated to the Madonna dellaNoce (Virgin Mary of the Walnut) in honor of that very same miraculous event. The building underwent several changes over the centuries, which partly altered its architecture. The most spectacular plan included the installation of a tree just inside the apse. However, fearing that believers might start to worship the tree rather than the Holy Virgin, this project was not realized. Anyway, this small church is a small worth-seeing jewel, and its walls, elegantly decorated, are adorned with some fascinating and beautiful paintings, such as an old depiction of the Virgin Mary with Child and “Jesus with the Canaanite woman”. Outside the building, a pretty square evokes the time when a market was held.
Some stone blocks, now turned into comfortable benches, were once used to liquefy metals, such as copper, which was widely traded just in this area. Later, Inverigo became one of the major silkworm-trading centres. Different stories inter twine with one common character: the people. Inverigo, a place where the border between legend and tradition fades away and where visitors can catch a glimpse of the past.

POMELASCA PORPERTY

Cross the ancient Market Place, where rises the Sanctuary, and follow Via Trento and Via Alberto da Giussano. Continuing on the dirt road, reach the Property. Duration of the visit: about an hour.
POMELASCA PORPERTY
In the green sea stretching as far as the eye can see, a small red spot stands out in the distance.
Seen from afar, the building looks surrounded by a cloud of mystery. By walking along the paths crossing the plains of the Pomelasca area, something starts to take shape and finally a bell tower is recognizable. It is called the small red church, because of the bright colour of its bricks, typically Lombard cotto. In the crypt of this fine church, built in 1952, several members of the Sormani family are buried. Indeed, these lands have long belonged to this Milanese family. And not too far away rises their fabulous country mansion.
Built on the ruins of a sixteenth-century patrician house, the villa in its current state can only be admired on some special occasions. To visit the interiors, just wait for one of the many cultural events organized there.
Past the gates, a magnificent courtyard dominates the scene. Two double staircases stand out covered with climbing plants against the backdrop of the main building. On the sides, the old stables, where some cats now scamper peacefully, and an old furnace, once used to prepare silkworms. On the walls, a luxuriant vineyard complements the numerous plants decorating the exterior. The staircase gives access to a higher level, where other trees adumbrate the garden. If you did not have the chance to step in, you should visit these areas anyway. An external manicured botanical garden features spectacular colours and scents. Several paths wind through the surrounding woods and the plains in the open countryside. This is a oasis that has miraculously survived to the surrounding urbanization, a perfect place to spend a day in the peaceful, rural atmosphere of bygone times.
